Adelante means to move ahead or
forward. The ultimate goal of moving ahead by improving economic conditions
and natural resources in the RC&D area was the Council's basis for
the name. The Adelante RC&D Area consists of Colfax, Mora and San Miguel
Counties in north-central New Mexico and covers 2,212,600 acres. A population
of 43,000 is served and represented by 19 RC&D Council sponsors.
The Adelante RC&D Area was
formed in 1969 and functioned as an extension of the Northern Rio Grande
RC&D Area. Adelante was officially authorized in July 1993. The Council
received recognition by the State of New Mexico as a nonprofit corporation
and was granted Federal tax-exempt status in July 1992.
Major issues and concerns identified
by the Council include:
- Coordination and promotion
of the conservation of natural resources.
- Facilitation of the sustainable
development of natural resources.
- Improvement of the area's economic
conditions.
- Enhancing the quality of life
in the Adelante RC&D Area.

Assistance was provided to the Bernal
Community Center in securing $26,000 from the State Legislature and $24,000
from a private foundation. This funding was used to add a multi-purpose
room and to re-roof and remodel the center. An additional $3,500 from the
New Mexico Re-Leaf program was used to install a windbreak around the center.
Adelante RC&D Council is providing
grant-writing assistance and overall coordination of a project to build
a Multi-use Sports Complex for soccer, baseball and football. Due to the
current lack of facilities, this project will provide immediate benefits
to hundreds of young people and their parents. Two full-size soccer fields
and one baseball field are targeted for completion in the spring of 2000.
The project involves several partners including the City of Las Vegas,
New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas Youth Soccer League, Las Vegas
Medical Center, Las Vegas City Schools and Tierra y Montes Soil & Water
Conservation District (SWCD).
Adelante RC&D Council assisted
Tierra y Montes SWCD in securing over $200,000 for a multi-phased project
aimed at improving the planning, treatment and stewardship of the Upper
Pecos Watershed. The project will continue for several years as local people
tackle the size and complexity of the watershed.
