The Hub RC&D Area derives its
name from being the center or hub of commerce in the State of New Mexico.
It was authorized in 1976 and serves the counties of Bernalillo, Cibola,
McKinley, Sandoval, eastern San Juan, southern Santa Fe, Torrance and Valencia.
Included in the Hub RC&D Area are 12 American Indian Tribes or Pueblos.
The Hub Council is comprised of 26 sponsors. The acreage covered by Hub
RC&D is 15,961,365, or approximately 20 percent of the State.
The Council was incorporated in
1990, and in 1993 it acquired tax-exempt status as a means of providing
greater assistance to the multitude of challenges, needs and opportunities
this area presents.
Hub RC&D's mission is to promote
the conservation, development and utilization of natural resources to improve
the general level of economic activity and to enhance the environment and
standard of living within the Hub RC&D Area. Major issues and concerns
of the Council are rural/economic/community development and social issues.
Some of the projects are:
Village of Jemez Springs
Convention/Civic Center
Hub RC&D is providing technical
advice during the planning phase of this project. We planned, and designed
a windbreak for the center. Also submitted a proposal for funding
for the Windbreak The windbreak was funded. The irrigation system
has been installed. The tree planting will be completed in April.
Cuba Biomass
Study
This
project will involve a feasibility study to establish a Wood Biomass Energy Installation. The project will look at utilizing waste products at a mill
site. Slash from tree removal and small diameter timber will be
used. If successful and a plant is built excess power can be sold
and the local schools are interested in using biomass as a source of
heating.

Assisting Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
The Hub Council is assisting SWCD's with several different projects. The
Ciudad SWCD located in Albuquerque is conducting a large scale education program
to inform the public and government offices of the role of the District.
We are trying to assist with funding for this education program. The
Cuba SWCD located in Cuba, NM has acquired approx. 40 acres of land from the
government and will be building a demonstration site. They will have the
native grasses planted, will show some watershed related projects and used it as
an outdoor classroom. As time and fund permit they will build an
administrative center to house the District and NRCS offices. Claunch-Pinto
SWCD in Mountainair is purchasing some land also. The goals are similar to
the Cuba SWCD. Valencia
SWCD in Los Lunas had been donated about 95 acres of land. Some of this land
is irrigated. The area will be developed for wildlife and crops will be
grown to feed wildlife. The
Hub RC&D will assist in funding searches for the SWCD's. |
