Atiq Syed has dual Master degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Michigan State University and is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Biosystems Engineering at Michigan State University.  Prior to joining the NRCS in March of 2006, he served as a Civil Engineer/Hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, Michigan office.  Some of his previous work experience includes;

  1. Development of a hydrodynamic flow and sediment transport model for the Kalamazoo River, Michigan, to assess sediment movement during flood events or dam failure. Publication at URL: http://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2004/5178/pdf/sir2004_5178.pdf

  2. Conducted a buoy study and participated in the ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) survey of the Lake St. Clair, Michigan. Publication at URL: http://mi.water.usgs.gov/pubs/OF/OF02-482/index.php

  3. Conducted nutrients load assessment study, using the USEPA, PLOAD model for selected watersheds in the Lake St. Clair drainage basin, Michigan. Publication at URL: http://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2006/5071/

  4.  Completed a nutrient and bacteria trend analyses study, using statistical techniques (Seasonal Kendall Tests) for selected NASQAN (National Water-quality Accounting Network) stations in Michigan. Publication at URL: http://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2005/5158/

  5. Developed an event based micro-watershed modeling approach using HEC-HMS for water-quality mass balance estimates in an urban watershed; and designed a flow measurement method for storm sewer pipes under submerged conditions. Publication at URL: http://www.egr.msu.edu/~phani/greece.pdf

As a State Hydraulic Engineer Mr. Syed provides support for hydrologic and hydraulic aspects of engineering works for all NRCS programs in New Mexico.  Primary workload includes Cooperative River Basin Program, Watershed Program, Dam Rehabilitation Program, Snow Survey, and Conservation Operation Program.
