Bernalillo Dam Rehab Underway
NRCS entered into a contract with MRT Heavy Hauling, Inc. for
rehabilitation of the Piedra Liza Dam near Bernalillo, New Mexico on
Monday, February 5. The Piedra Liza Dam was built to protect both rural
and urban areas after a devastating flood in 1949 destroyed a
100-year-old convent in Bernalillo. NRCS is expecting an immediate
start-up of this $2,488,000 project, and a completion date in early
June. MRT Heavy Hauling, Inc. is an Albuquerque based firm.
Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP)
The New Mexico NRCS staff is currently developing contracts for those
Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) applications that ranked
the highest during the 2007 application period.
Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP)
NRCS New Mexico is gearing up for the 2007 Farm and Ranch Lands
Protection Program application period. If you are interested in
participation in this farm and ranch lands program, contact your local
land trust or Seth Fiedler at (505)761-4416.

Smarts Turn Forest Into Prime Habitat
Solar panels that power a water well are making a portion of the
Smokey Bear District in the Lincoln National Forest habitable during dry
periods for wild turkey, mule deer, elk, and an occasional javelina
thanks, in part, to the efforts of the South Central Mountain RC&D,
their NRCS RC&D coordinator, and the U.S. Forest Service. For the full
