Grant SWCD Recognized by USDA Under SecretaryGrant SWCD Nationally Recognized

The Grant Soil & Water Conservation District received national recognition by United States Department of Agriculture Under Secretary Mark Rey when he traveled from Washington, D.C. in conjunction with Earth Day to acknowledge their leadership in a cooperative conservation venture in the Gila.  The event focused attention on efforts that overcame political barriers where mixed land ownership could hinder the process of addressing conservation needs on a landscape or watershed basis.  Under Secretary Rey assured the Grant SWCD he would carry their success story to Congress as the discussion of the 2007 Farm Bill progressed.

Gregory FenchelRiparian Restoration Pioneer Earns Major Award

Gregory Fenchel, Los Lunas Plant Materials Center manager, on March 12, 2007, was named Plant Materials Outstanding Employee for 2006 by NRCS's national headquarters. Mike Shivers at Sichler FarmsSichler Farms Produce Introduces Subsurface Drip Irrigation to Socorro County

Sichler Farms Produce is introducing subsurface drip irrigation systems in their operation this spring near San Antonio, and using this technology that is so popular in southern New Mexico to test its feasibility in a new and important cropping area.  This technology has been moving north through innovative farmers in the Hatch valley, and high value cropping that use new technology appears to be a trend for the future in the Rio Grande valley.  Adobe Acrobat DocumentFor the full story (747 KB)
