Improving Conservation Outcomes with
NRCS Partnership Programs

NRCS partners with state and local governments, tribes, agricultural organizations, non-profits and others to focus conservation assistance on local projects. Groups that direct funding and/or staff to address natural resource issues in New Mexico may be able to work with NRCS to leverage dollars and expertise to improve local conservation efforts. NRCS partnership programs are listed below.

Assistance for Acequia Associations The Interstate Stream Commission and NRCS have entered into an agreement whereby NRCS provides planning and design work for acequia projects funded through state programs. Partners may request assistance at any time of the year.
Agricultural Water Enhancement Program (AWEP) Through AWEP, entities such as federally recognized Indian Tribes, States, units of local government, agricultural or silvicultural associations, or other such groups may propose partnership agreements to work with NRCS to deliver EQIP funding to landowners and growers in a targeted area. FY 2010 request for proposals announcement coming soon.
Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) CIG awards competitive grants to non-federal or non-governmental organizations, tribes or individuals with projects that will stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies. CIG funds projects targeting innovative on-the-ground conservation, including pilot projects and field demonstrations. CIG is not a research program. Cooperative Conservation Partnership Initiative (CCPI) CCPI is another partnership initiative that allows entities to propose partnership agreements to deliver funding for a targeted rsource concern or area through  EQIP, the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP). FY 2010 request for proposals announcement coming soon.
Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) Program With EWP, NRCS assists project sponsors and individuals conducting emergency measures to relieve imminent hazards to life and property created by a natural disaster after a flood, fire, drought or other occurrence. EWP work must yield benefits to more than one person. NRCS accepts requests on an as-needed basis.
Farm and Ranchland Protection Program (FRPP) FRPP is a voluntary program to help entities with established easement programs work with farmers and ranchers to protect agricultural land from conversion to non-agricultural uses. NRCS directs matching funds to the partner to purchase easements. Partners must provide at least 50 percent of the easement value. FY2011 proposal cutoff date TBA.
Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) GRP is a voluntary program to help farmers and ranchers protect their agricultural land from conversion to other uses. With GRP, NRCS assists landowners with conserving and restoring grassland, rangeland, pastures and certain other lands. Entities with corresponding goals to protect and enhance grasslands should contact NRCS to talk about ways to leverage their programs and services with those of NRCS to improve conservation outcomes in New Mexico. To be considered for 2010 funding, applications must be submitted by February 26.
Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) With WRP, NRCS assists landowners interested in restoring or protecting wetland areas. Entities with corresponding goals to protect and enhance wetlands should contact NRCS to talk about ways to leverage their programs and services with those of NRCS to improve conservation outcomes in New Mexico. FY2011 proposal cutoff date TBA.
Small Watershed Program The Small Watershed Program is a cooperative, partnership program to help states, local government and tribes plan and carry out projects to:  1) Prevent damage from erosion, floodwater and sediment;  2) Further the conservation, development, utilization, and disposal of water; and  3) Further the conservation and proper utilization of land. Partners may request assistance at any time of the year.
