| Tramperos-Punta de Agua WatershedDescription of WatershedThe watershed crosses state boundaries from northeastern New Mexico into the western Panhandle of Texas. In New Mexico, the watershed includes portions of Harding, Quay and Union counties, and in Texas, the area covers portions of Dallam, Hartley and Oldham counties. The total estimated area in the watershed is 1,008,440 acres. The area that lies in Texas with parts in the counties of Hartley, Dallam and Oldham consist of approximately 370,760 acres or 37% of the watershed. The land uses in this part of the watershed consist of Rangeland, Irrigated Cropland and Dry Cropland. The soils vary from Deep Sand to Very Shallow. The average rainfall is about 16 inches. There are about 247 producers in the New Mexico part of the watershed. In the Cropland areas of the watershed, there are about 26 farms covering 36,105 acres. The average size farm is 1400 acres. The primary crops include corn, wheat and grain sorghum. Some other minor crops include potatoes, alfalfa, soybeans, pinto beans, sunflowers, peanuts and forage sorghums. In the Rangeland areas of the watershed, there are about 23 ranches covering 334,655 acres. The average size ranch is 14,550 acres. The soils vary from deep sands to very shallow. The ranches consist of native short grasses with some tall grasses in the sandy areas. Most ranches are composed of a mix of cow-calf and yearling operations.
