Arroyo del Macho Watershed

Description of Watershed

The total estimated area in the watershed is 1,200,208 acres. This watershed is located in De Baca, Lincoln, and Chaves counties in south central portion of New Mexico.

The land uses in this watershed consist of rangeland and woodland. The watershed area is in the Pecos-Canadian Plains and Valleys resource areas. The topography ranges from steep limestone,  pinon-juniper covered hills on the north side of the Capitan Mountains to mixed brush and grass covered plains to the northeast.  The soils range from very shallow cobbly loam to moderately deep cobbly loams above caliche covered limestone, with deep clay loam and clayey soils along the arroyos leading east towards the Pecos River.

The Arroyo del Macho watershed has approximately 151 farm and ranch operating units. In the cropland areas of the watershed there are about 3,333 acres. The primary crops include pastureland, cotton, small grains, alfalfa, and other hay crops.  In the rangeland area of the watershed there are about 1,127,660 acres. The ranches are mostly cow/calf and wildlife production operations.
