Description of Watershed

The total estimated area in the watershed is 539,907 acres. This watershed is located in Colfax and Union Counties in the extreme northeast portion of New Mexico and flows into Dallam and Hartley counties, in the extreme northwest part of Texas.

The land uses in this watershed consist of rangeland and some dryland farming. The watershed area is a combination of Pecos - Canadian Plains and Valleys, and Southern High Plains resource areas. The topography ranges from level to steep juniper covered basalt-capped mesas and hills on the northwest end of the watershed. The southeastern portion of the watershed are level to moderately sloping uplands.  The soils range from shallow to moderately deep soils with silty clay or silty clay loam soils over basalt in the northern part of the watershed, to deep gently sloping loamy soils in the south central portion of the watershed.  There are deep moderately textured soils near Carrizo creek.
