Upper Pecos Watershed

Description of Watershed

The total estimated area in the watershed is 3,068,001 acres. This watershed is located in Quay, De Baca, Chaves, Guadalupe, Roosevelt, Torrance, and Lincoln counties in the southcentral portion of New Mexico.

The land uses in this watershed consist of mainly rangeland, with some irrigated cropland and pastureland along the Pecos river. The watershed area is a combination of the Pecos-Canadian Plains and Valleys, and the Southern Desertic Basins, Plains, and Mountains resource areas. The topography ranges from moderately sloping limestone juniper covered hills in the west and north, and sandstone in the northern and eastern parts with scattered brush and mesquite. The soils range from shallow to moderately deep loamy soils in all parts of the watershed. They are moderately deep to deep, with moderate to heavy textured soils along the Pecos River.

The Upper-Pecos watershed has approximately 500 farm and ranch operating units. In the cropland areas of the watershed there are about 17,594 acres. The primary crops include pastureland, small grains, alfalfa, and other hay crops.  In the rangeland area of the watershed there are about 3,046,531 acres. The ranches are mostly cow/calf and wildlife production operations.
