| Ute WatershedDescription of WatershedThe total estimated area in the watershed is 1,378,127 acres. This watershed is located in Quay, San Miguel, Colfax, Harding, Union, and Colfax counties in the extreme northeast portion of New Mexico. The land uses in this watershed consist of rangeland and some dryland farming. The watershed area is a combination of Pecos-Canadian Plains and Valleys, and Southern High Plains resource areas. The topography ranges from level to nearly level grass covered basalt-capped mesas, with sides of steep to very steep rought broken land and hills on the north and west side of the watershed. There are grass covered gently undulating uplands on the east side and nearly level to gently sloping alluvial fans in the center of the watershed. The soils range from shallow to moderately deep soils wiith clay loam or loam textures to clayey textures over basalt in the north and western part of the watershed. There are deep gently sloping sandy soils in the eastern side of the watershed. The central portion has deep soils with clay loams and clay textured soils near Ute creek. The Ute watershed has approximately 149 farm and ranch operating units. In the cropland areas of the watershed there are about 17,050 acres. The primary crops include pastureland, small grains, alfalfa, and other hay crops. In the rangeland area of the watershed there are about 1,349,372 acres. The ranches are mostly cow/calf and wildlife production operations.
