Playas Lake Watershed

Description of Watershed

The total estimated area in the watershed is 1,013,159 acres. This watershed is located in the southwestern corner of Luna County, eastern side of south central to southeastern portions of Hidalgo County, and on the southern edge of Grant County in the extreme southwest portion of New Mexico. It is bordered by Old Mexico in the south, Peloncito Mountains on the west side, Deming and Florida Mountains on the east side and the Mogollon Mountains in the north.

The Playas Lake watershed has approximately 81 farm and ranch operating units. In the cropland areas of the watershed there are about 8,225 acres. The primary crops include pasture, small grains, alfalfa, and other hay crops. In the rangeland area of the watershed there are about 981,140 acres. The ranches are mostly cow/calf and wildlife production operations.
